The reason that dark does not stay very well is that it is not mostly bleach, like blond color. You will need to go to the salon and get your color stripped and then get dark.

Make sure you are buying permanent hair dye. If you buy the other stuff then the color fades out.

0. Use only permanent hair color- no semi-permanents allowed!

1. After you dye your hair, wait 48 hours before you use any shampoo. This will give your hair time to absorb the color.

2. Wash with a gentle, color-preserving shampoo as infrequently as possible. If you currently shampoo daily, switch to a routine where you shampoo one day and condition the second day.

3. Use a styling product with UV protection and color-lock properties.

You've got to go get the color done professionally at a good salon. And I mean a good one, not one of those strip-mall chain-salon places. Home color fades out really fast or turns weird brassy off-shades. Salon-done color lasts a lot longer.

Try a stronger peroxide

Don't process your hair as long as the previous application.

The stronger 30% volume peroxide works faster and deeper on the hair. As a result it also takes less time to work.

Check at 10 minute intervals by wiping the dye off a small strand of hair using a dry paper towel. If you want the hair darker replace the wiped strand into moistened hair.Check again 10 minutes later and so on. You shouldn't exceed a 1/2 hour.

Rinse thoroughly without shampoo. Then dry with low heat to help set the color. Shampoo in two days and use conditioner.

Remember healthy hair and scalps only need to be shampooed every few days unless you have extremely oily skin.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

i have the same problem... except that i am asian, so my natural color is black. however, my hair's been brown for almost 4 years, and i dyed it back around a month ago.. it's pitch black but i can see it fading already.

Why does black/dark brown hair dye fade so quickly?

the reason why it does not stay is because when you lighten your hair u r basically stripping everything out so when u go to color over it the color has nothing to hold it in inside the hair and your cuticle is lifted so when you shampoo your shampooing the color out it just takes time and you just have to keep coloring it i would go to a salon

Why does black/dark brown hair dye fade so quickly?

You are either lifting too much color out of your hair and not depositing enough, therefore stripping it. Or you are shampooing your hair with too harsh of a shampoo. If you continue to put color over color, the hair cannot hold on to the artificial color. Use a color with no or little lift, you just want to deposit color.

If you go to Sallays and ask for clear hair dye it will make it last longer. Also you Have to use color shampoo if you want it to last (I'm a hairstyles)
