Highlighting Medium brown hair with all-over hair color?

Can you highlight hair with normal hair color. I want some auburn and gold highlights on my medium brown hair, but the highlighting options out there are not very diverse. Any suggestions, or can I simply use all over hair color but with a highlighting kit?

well as a stylist you know where im gonna go with this one but i strongly suggest you get it done professionally because if you take the cheap way out and do it with at home stuff it most definatly will look horrible and the $$ you tried to save will kick you in the butt when you have to have it fixed can we say color correction????? why dont you call around and ask salons how much for highlights with 2 colors and then ask how much for a color correction and see the big difference im telling you if you cant afford it wait till you can youll be much happier and save $$$ trust me- hairstylist of 8 yrs rich off of colorcorrections lol

you can highlight any hair, i would advise you to get it done professionally, the highlighting kits rarely work and often you have to go get it fixed.

You can highlight with color. I do a friend's hair with a lightener for some foils and a blonde color for others to add variety. Try to get the same brand colors with the same processing time to get even results.

Take the other girls advice and get it done professionally. I did my highlights at home once (a few weeks ago) and I regret it. I still have yet to fix my hair! the colorist is paid to make your hair look how you want it!
