Genetics question. If the mother has blonde hair and blue eyes and the father has brown hair, and br

My question is : Take a mother with blonde hair and dark blue eyes and a father with brown hair and dark brown eyes. What will their children look like? I think you have to do a punnett square, but i forget how to do it.

There are two possibilities (assuming that we live in a world where there is only blue and brown eyes and only blonde and brown hair): 1) the father with brown hair and brown eyes may carry the recessive gene for blond hair and blue eyes (his mother may have been blonde and blue eyed for example). If this is the case then there is a one in four chance that their child will have blue eyes and a three in four chance it will have brown eyes, same with blonde hair. 2) the father does not carry the recessive gene and is homozygous for brown eyes and hair. If this is the case then all children will have brown eyes and brown hai.



With the blonde mother with brown eyes, the children will all have a one in four chance of having blonde hair assuming the father is recessive for blonde and no chance of blonde hair if the father is homozygous for brown hair. In order for the children to have blue eyes then both parents must have the recessive gene for blue eyes, in which case the child will have a one in four chance of being blue eyed. If neither parent or only one parent has the recessive gene for blue eyes then the child will definatly be brown eyed.

This is a question where giving you the answer is going to be obvious to the teacher, because you don't understand why the answer is that. So instead I'll talk about Punnett squares (which you do need). I'd also advise that what you're asking people to answer would take a lot of diagrams and text to answer properly, so you aren't likely to get a complete (and correct) answer you can copy/paste... if you give an answer with no diagrams and workings to a teacher, they're going to be suspicious.



For a simple one, put the two gene the mother has down one side, the ones the father has down the other. These are your headings. Then fill in each box with the heading from the row and column.



Then all you need to understand is that blond hair and blue eyes are recessive to brown hair and eyes. You can now see which offspring will have the dominant trait, and which won't. As some advice, the father could have more than one genotype... so unless your question tells you his genotype, the teacher might be expecting several answers for each alternative.



It is possible that you can get away with two simple ones (one for eyes, one for hair). If those are all you learnt in class, it's probably expected that you'll describe the percentages of eye and hair colour seperately.



If you've ever seen the bigger punnett squares in class, I imagine that's what the teacher wants. These are the ones with four headings on each row and column, instead of two.

Brown hair and Brown eyes are dominant genes so they should be written as BB and BB (B standing for brown). - I'm assuming the brown hair is homozygous dominant.



Blonde hair and blonde eyes are recessive so they should be bb and bb.



The punnett squares should look something like this:

Eyes should be the same.



As a result, the children will have heterozygous dominant genes, so there will be a 100% chance of them having brown hair and brown eyes.



As for the second question, the genes are



Mother - hair: bb; eyes: Bb (I'm assuming heterozygous dominant)



Father - hair: BB; eyes: BB

Therefore the children have a 100% chance of having brown hair.
