Why is my hair brown in sunlight, and black in photos?

I naturally have dark brown hair (almost black). I recently dyed it lighter (permanent tint). In the sunlight, it looks the same color as my friend's brown hair. However in photos taken at night, my hair looks black, while hers looks brown. Why is that? And can I have lighter hair in photos too?
