Okay, last march I dyed my naturally medium-dark brown hair with "Revlon Colorist Dark Brown" hair dye. My brown was dull and I wanted to make it pretty. It turned out jet black! It was so ugly. Now my hair is naturally brown again, still dull.
I just purchased Herbal Essences Color Me Vibrant Chocolate Velvet (Dark Brown) hair dye but I'm scared to use it because I don't want the same thing to happen again.
What can I do to prevent it from turning jet black? Leave it on for a shorter time? Lighten my hair just slightly with a kit first? Please help!

I would really follow the directions, if you like the color on the box, it should show up the same on your hair. But if you are really worried, I would rinse it out early! Good Luck!

Take your hair to the salon.

okay i had the same problem before but i was dying the underneath my hair purple and it came out a dirty brownish color. I suggest that you should dye your hair blonde first and then it would lighten it up a little bit. Then dye your hair normal color.
that worked for me.
It also added extra shine to my hair.
Also make sure that you are using color treated shampoo and conditioner.
I hope i helped alittle bit.

I would suggest doing the strand test in the instructions. You can grab a strand from underneath so it's not noticeable. The strand test helps you determine the color you want and how long you need to leave the dye on your hair to get that. I have never actually done the strand test, but there were times I thought perhaps for once, I should follow the directions! :D
If you're looking to simply put some shine into your hair, there are styling products that do that. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the hair dye. Just an option...
